“This is Free Trader Beowulf, calling anyone…

Mayday… losing cabin pressure fast… calling anyone… please help…
This is Free Trader Beowulf …
Mayday…”
– Cover of the Traveller boxed set, 1977

I still can’t read that without the hairs rising on the back of my neck. It hooked me into the game better than any cover art would have done.

Traveller for me means the Little Black Books, and specifically, Books 1-3, the original basic set. You can still get these at Far Future Enterprises, as PDF files on CD, which puts them ahead of Original D&D as far as availability goes. (WotC: Please put OD&D back on sale as PDFs! I missed them last time, and my books are 35 years old now, and falling to pieces!)

Currently, I have no suitable gaming group so I shall use a solo game as a vehicle for exploring Traveller. Fortunately, due to the sandbox nature of the game, this should not be difficult. Look out for season two of the Arioniad, coming to this blog when I get around to it…

  1. R Singers says:

You could always do a play by email. I have my original set to hand. 🙂

  2. I know exactly what you mean about that box cover text. There, my hairs are standing up again!
