I think these constraints are very common for many gamers with non-gaming families and friends or with jobs that demand a lot of their time. I'm looking forward to reading future posts. When I get the time, I'll plug this post over on The Dice of Life as I think it'll be of interest to our readers.

In regards to morning commute, I've discovered that taking public transportation for my work commute has given me an opportunity to find more time for reading and reviewing content for RPGs. I was tempted to write an article about this, but I'm unsure of two things:

1. It's not enough to warrant a full article.
2. Public transportation isn't necessarily available for everyone.

Tuesday night I put a Reaper Chronoscope human next to an old Heartbreaker half ogre anti-hero. The human mini was taller. I specifically looked at the Reaper blister to see what the scale was. It was 25mm. Obviously my half-ogre has shrunk with age.

Yes - it's close to 6mm I would think, that's about 1/300th. For a while I played WWII mechanised with 1/150th cardboard models, but they were a bit too fiddly for me. Since I focus mostly on skirmishes, I wouldn't go below 15mm (1/120th or so), but if I wanted to play armour, I'd go with 1/285th or 1/300th. Modern tank and ATGW ranges are in the region of a few hundred to a few thousand metres, and those scales are the largest at which a scale tank duel could occur with a proportionate ground scale.

Have you considered 1/285th scale? We use GHQ http://www.ghqmodels.com/ to play Flames of War. We either use the inch measurements as centimetres when we play 1/285th scale or just leave the ground scale as it is.

We started because it was a lot cheaper to build an army at the smaller scale, but given there's quite a bit of the proper 15mm stuff floating about we use the GHQ stuff to have large tank battles.

Any of the Games Workshop dungeon crawl games would work; Heroquest, Advanced Heroquest, or Warhammer Quest. They're all available for download on the internet if you don't have the actual games, the first of them as PDF replacement rulebooks from the manufacturer, and the others as "abandonware".

You could also consider The Other Game Company's Dungeon Bash, although that would require D&D 3.5 as well, and I'm sure there are many others. All of the ones I know except Heroquest focus on randomly-generated dungeons, but there's no reason not just to stick with one.

You could also look at the larger battlemaps on the WotC site, under D&D Miniatures; or 0One Games' customisable battlemaps, the minotaur's lair and so forth. These have no game rules as such, but WotC have the D&D Minis rules and unit statistics on their website for download free of charge.

I'm looking at pulling apart some of the WHFRP 2e stuff into a series of combats with some narrative text in between. I think there is a lot of nice fluff in the WHFRP material but as a role playing "module" it is awful. What I'm really after is a way to use a lot of my painted miniatures, and have a set "dungeon" that can be done in two to three hours on a week night without having to have the same people there every time.

OK, tried it now - see dungeon crawl 1, Daemon Summoning. Using soldiers as skaven seems to work well, although in larger encounter areas I might increase their Pace. If I wind up using them a lot I'll do a conversion from WFRP stats, which would give them probably a d8 Agility and Pace of 7-8, I think. Otherwise they are much the same as the Soldier archetype.
